Saturday in the City

What a great day in the city at the Clarendon Hotel, Lux Central, & Postino Winecafe! Also, my photo of Henry Gray, and Bob Corritore is up on the wall at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix which is very exciting, so of course I had to stop in to commemorate the accomplishment! Style-wise, that day I recreated the awesome ‘hair pineapple’ style that I have seen on a few beauty blogs, and I think it turned out pretty cool! Pictured dining choices: breve iced coffee with one extra shot from Lux Central, 4 bruschetta selections from Postino, & a margarita from the Clarendon! All photos by MVHPhoto.

September Photo Diary

At the end of the summer, I began a photographic project where I aimed to capture the ‘spirit’ of the end of the year and document the often unnoticed moments in life. Here are the snapshots from September 2013. All images were taken using Kodak film with an ISO of 800.

Stay tuned for pictures from October, November and December!

The Detox: Day 6- An Update

Alright ya’ll! It’s now day 6 of my 30 Day Detox and I have decided it would be best to post when I feel significant physical/mood changes and basically update about how skinny I am getting {ha ha!}. It would get monotonous to read essentially the same information for 30 days.

Sleep:

  • I have been still having off and on days but for the most part I am getting in 7-10 hours a night.

Workout:

  • Haven’t worked out since Day #1! I have been so busy! I need to get back on the treadmill this week!

Diet:

  • My diet has been the same for the past week: lots of vegetables (mushrooms, tomatoes, celery, cucumbers, etc), tons of lettuce, sunflower seeds and water. Also, I have been eating the same fruit pretty routinely (bananas, oranges, watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew melon, etc). I need to incorporate different fruit this week like berries and grapes.

Physical differences/changes:

  • I feel GREAT today-woke up without an alarm and felt rested and alert. Even though it’s mid-day I have not experienced a slump and I am still as energetic as the morning. My body feels much lighter and I have lost a little bit of weight. I feel better all around! Best day of energy so far!

Mood/Cravings:

  • My mood was very low on Sunday (2/24) but I have bounced back and feel great, emotionally. My cravings have changed! I am now craving healthy food as opposed to burgers and pizza because I feel so good that I do not jeopardize my physical stamina by eating horrible food. Today before getting lunch, I immediately thought of fruit before Taco Bell! This is a major change!

I am getting thinner!

The Detox- Day 2: The Temptation Begins

Let me start by following up with the night of Feb 21st: by 8 o’clock that evening, hunger really kicked in and I started craving cheeseburgers and assorted junk food-I could not even turn on the television because of the food ads. I had a strong urge to cave in and go get a burger but with the help of my alliances I resisted.

Sleep:

  • I noticed that at 11:30pm that night I became incredibly drowsy and was in bed by midnight-woke up around 8 a.m. and then fell back asleep until 10:00 a.m. — I hit snooze twice and woke up feeling worse than I did before bed. I had a headache and there was a significant burning sensation in my eye sockets. This is typical for me, but yesterday morning it was especially bad. (an 8 on a 1-10 discomfort scale). The entire morning I was tired, listless and extremely low on energy.

Workout:

  • No workout yesterday. I noticed I was sore from the treadmill the previous day.

Diet:

  • Yesterday (02/22) I did not consume as many calories as I needed to. In a 14 hour day I consumed the following:
  • 1 vegan taco salad
  • A handful of almonds
  • A handful of granola
  • A handful of sunflower seeds
  • 1 orange

Needless to say, I was very very hungry by nightfall, so I just ate a few almonds before bed.

Water:

  • Best water day so far! (It’s only been 2 days ha ha!) I drank 1 liter of Dasani and 2 huge cups of water at the bar. (The big cups they use for “beer steins”). Overall, I did not feel as thirsty as I usually do, and the water was definitely refreshing.

Physical Sensations/Differences:

  • Odd headaches! I cannot describe them as simple headaches. It feels like my brain is basting in acid and it hurts near my temples and in the back of my head and the sensation makes me very lethargic. I chalk this up to needing more sleep-but I do not know if that’s a good idea considering I slept 10 hours the previous night
  • More “stable” energy level during the day. Once my initial morning fog lifted, I felt generally capable of daily tasks. It was a low energy day though, I felt slower and more tired than I did on the 21st and even when I perked up in the afternoon it was fractional.

Mood/Cravings:

  • Okay. Cravings were THE WORST during the evening. I wanted to give up so badly and eat every fast food item I could think of. At the bar, I wanted a beer very badly (but I resisted and drank steins of water with lemon!) but mostly I was craving food. Everything that was cooking at the bar smelled stronger than usual and seemed infinitely more appetizing. This was the most intense craving I have had yet (way stronger than the first day)
  • Although I wanted food, my sugar craving was non-existent! I almost ordered cranberry juice at the bar, but felt sickened by the thought of anything sweet. I also have not wanted a soda yet! (whoo!)
  • I was moody when I woke up because I was tired and felt awful but as my energy leveled I felt generally normal during the remainder of the day.

Generally the 22nd was a slightly below average day, have not noticed anything dramatic in the way I feel. I should have eaten way more food but just did not have the time yesterday.

The Detox-Day 1: It Always Starts Off With a Bang!

Let’s see, let’s see…once the clock struck midnight, my Official 30 Day Detox begun!

Sleep:

  • Due to extreme exhaustion in general, I was out when my head hit the pillow at midnight, only to be awakened 7 hours later by the sound of chainsaws. Although the early morning gardeners outside my window did not stay for more than 5 minutes-it was an unwelcome alarm at 8:47 a.m. I had slept a full 7 hours but felt extremely sick with fatigue, my eye-burn level was around ‘7’ on a 1-10 scale. I decided I just couldn’t function unless I slept another hour or so. Well, well well…I woke up at 12:30 p.m.: clocking my slumber for the night at a mind-boggling 12 1/2 hours!!!!!! (Gasp!) And get this: I was still tired and felt like I could sleep until 2:30 p.m., but hey, got stuff to do!

Workout:

  • When I finally got up and started moving around, I drudged myself to the gym and ran on the treadmill for 15 min with a 5 min warm-up/cool-down. Nothing too traumatic and by the time I got back to my room, I felt lively, awake and light.

Diet:

  • For lunch, I consumed the following:
  • 1 bowl of spinach, lettuce and 5 large tomato slices  (mixed together)
  • 1 bowl of cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms and squash
  • 1 bowl of mixed fruit (pineapple, melon, cantaloupe, watermelon)
  • 1/2 bowl sliced cucumber
  • 1 banana (not pictured)
  • 1 glass of water

Water:

  • I bought a gallon of water and have consumed 2 cups  from the jug. At lunch, I drank 1 cup worth of water, and preceding/following my workout I consumed 3 cups total. I’m not yet at a liter (my daily goal), and will continue to drink water for the rest of the night. Overall, it was difficult to drink even the small glasses that I did, but I enjoyed not tasting that gross aftertaste of soft drinks and other fructose-heavy beverages that I typically consume.

*when I say “cup” in this instance, I mean a glass of about this size*

Physical sensations/differences:

  • I immediately felt more awake and lively following the workout and my lingering tiredness vanished. The healthy meal at lunch made me feel light, and overall really great for about 30 minutes. After that 30 minutes, a deep tiredness hit me much like if I had eat a big meal of fattening food and meat products. I felt weary and sluggish, but that only lasted for 30-40 minutes before I started to feel more normal. The past few hours, I have felt slightly (I’d say 40%) more energetic/good than I normally do.
  • My hunger is pretty stable; hours following that meal, I felt I “could” eat more if I wanted to, but didn’t need to. I stocked up on sunflower seeds, cashews, almonds, oat clusters and almonds for snack food in case I get hungry later on tonight.

Mood/Cravings:

  • Overall, my mood is normal. I feel marginally more happy because my body feels pretty energetic and strong (like I could go out all night and be fine!)
  • During lunch, when I smelled cooking food, the urge to eat it hit me with almost unbearable force, before subsiding just enough for me to resist. The look of cooked/processed food made my mouth water and the food I was eating seemed to taste more bland with every bite. I suppose this was all psychological, and I’m glad I did not give in.

Overall Sleepiness: (1-10): 4.5

So far so good! Day 2 here I come!
